MTV Did it Again:2011 Video Music Awards

DiThe show started off with Mr. Gaga and ended with a skipping, skinny jeans wearing, singing Lil Wayne. I might ruffle some feathers, but I will go on record and say that the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards was one the best award shows all year! We were all looking forward to seeing what Lady Gaga would do to top her egg ensemble; but her alter ego, Mr. Gaga, was very theatrical and was actually a quite refreshing break from the fake blood and meat dress from previous years. We couldn’t breathe for too long as Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry both tried to follow in her footsteps with their outfits- but fail!
Let’s get to some winners and performances
I am happy that such a positive and powerful messaged song won “Video of the Year” with Perry’s Firework, but I could have done without the yellow cube headpiece. Several dancing Britney’s took the stage to honor Britney Spears’ career. Britney did quite well for herself taking home two moonmen from the show including Best Pop Video. She looked very Britney, and I will leave it at that.  I really hope Adele’s album sales soared after she took the stage to croon one of her album’s hits “Someone Like You” This was her debut VMA performance.
MTV never sleeps on the surprises, and what a surprise it was to see Jay Z and Kanye West hit the stage to perform their new single “Otis”. Out of sheer shock I’m sure, one fan had a Lil Mama moment and tried to run on stage, but Jay Z was prepared this time as they were quickly rushed off stage.  If Adele wasn’t enough for you, everyone was all abuzz over the blinged-out cast wearing, comfy chair sitting Jessie J. A talent that surprised us by belting out tunes during intermission from all the stars including the TLC hit “Scrubs”
It was definitely the ladies’ year and the biggest lady (no pun intended) was Beyonce. You didn’t think I would skip that did you? She runs the world. She was practically a human disco ball from the sequined jacket to the way she glowed over the announcement of her pregnancy. She didn’t dance like Queen B usually does, with good reason, as she unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her growing belly at the end of her performance. Jay Z could not control his excitement. That is probably the most excitement I’ve ever seen him show over their relationship. Congratulations to Beyonce and Jay Z! That will be one talented child!
MTV also honored the late Amy Whinehouse with an appearance from Russell Brand, Tony Bennett and Bruno Mars. It was very nice to see Whinehouse remembered for her remarkable talent.
MTV definitely didn’t disappoint this year and all the right stars were honored and showcased for their talent. Well, except for that Tyler the Creator guy, but that’s a different blog. I will now blast Adele and Jessie J until the world ends and wait for the first pics of Beyonce’s unborn star!
Well done MTV,
TerashaNicole
