Perhaps part of the problem with child obesity is parents placing the responsibility of entertaining their children on Justin Beiber, Nintendo DS, cell phones, iCArly and any other less than physical activity to keep their child entertained. Everyone is quick to place the blame on fast-food restaurants, but eleven year old Brittany at 130lbs did not drive herself through the drive through.
The best advice I’ve heard someone give on child obesity is comedian Mo’Nique to a mother struggling with an overweight 13 year old daughter. She told the mother, you have to take the first step. Watch what YOU eat and exercise with your daughter. Get up thirty minutes earlier to take a walk and to fix a healthy breakfast. Don’t let her have what she wants to eat only give her what she needs. She only eats that way and doesn’t make healthier choices because you don’t make her. That is advice we can all learn from. Regardless of your feelings towards Mo’Nique and her outlook on weight she makes a valid point and her own weight chronicles this advice.
There are many causes of child obesity ranging from over-eating, genetics, emotional stress, abuse, health problems and so on. Whatever the case may be, parents have to take the first step in making sure their family is healthy and lose the ‘do as I say not as I do’ mentality and lead by example. It is not about being super skinny, but it is about raising a generation of healthier of kids and this starts at your own dinner table.
