No New Year's Resolutions

2011 has been one heck of a year for us at Radar, and I'm sure for you all as well. I will be the first to admit that I do not know half of what I think I know. I only know what this year's experiences have taught me. As this year races to an end, I refuse to find myself asking the clichĂ© question: where did the time go? I know where it went. Some days it was used wisely and then there were those days I should have gotten up a little earlier and made it count. 2011 was exactly what it was promised to be: full ups and downs. Such is life. I do not believe in New Years Resolution’s. I find myself being surrounded by people that fall 365 days short of what they really set out to do the minute the clock struck twelve. From everything thing we face on a day to  day basis, along with the anticipation of the new year; I would think each year would get easier for everyone. Instead of making resolutions this year, I would like to make some reflections; and opt to call them New Year’s lessons. From the mistakes I have made and situations that made my year.

1. A new year is not going to keep the promises you made; instead you have to be the change you want to see in yourself and those around you. Reflect and ask yourself: did I really accomplish what I set to do this year? I’ve learned that no matter what situation I am facing people will say the same thing: it takes time. Well, you have 365 days of time approaching you to make some things change for the better. Be the change you desire to see in this world.

2. We all hope for a change in our lives; but how many of us, after a situation has played out, wish for a different outcome? You cannot go into 2012 holding on to regret. I am an avid believer that everything, for better or for worse, happens for a reason. These reasons may take time in some cases to be revealed to us, but nonetheless do not regret a single occurrence in your life. Try to find a silver lining in whatever the situation may be and use that as wisdom to overcome the next obstacle. After all, obstacles are only stepping stones to help us reach our full potential.

3. 2011 had a plethora of love and loss. I now understand the true meaning of forgiveness. No one on this earth is perfect. I know I do not strive to be. In love and loss, whatever meaning that may hold for you, I learned that you have to forgive people for the wrong they do to you unintentionally and intentionally. Never fix your heart to be unforgiving. When you take the time to forgive, you show the true love in your heart and only then will you find peace and happiness.

4. Do you ever feel like there was a day or even longer where you could not see any footprints on your path? That is when you have to learn that for that moment you may be exactly where you are supposed to be. Faith in God includes faith in his timing. The footprints are there, but you may have to get on your knees to see them or look up. Sometimes we have to be still and concentrate on all that is around us and only then will the path continue.

5. There is absolutely nothing wrong with letting go. This can be applied to every avenue in your life. 2011 is gone there is no time for the shoulda-coulda-woulda’s. Let go of anything and everyone that hindered you. That may include letting go of the person you thought you were and it also means letting go of fear.

So, 2011 wasn’t the best year- it’s ok. Yesterday is gone and tomorrow is not promised. Don’t make resolutions. Take the lessons you’ve learned and LIVE! Especially to my ladies, Lebron doesn’t have any rings either let go of the ‘put a ring on it’ mentality and LIVE. Young people turn off celeb-reality and LIVE your reality. 2012 is here are you ready to love, to laugh and most of all to LIVE!

I'm Ready,
Terasha Nicole

Weekend Radar

Let's see what news made the radar over the weekend:

College Sports: It was the weekend of upsets in college football. Being a little biased, I am pleased to announce the best conference, the SEC of course, is running the BCS Rankings with the top 3 spots held by LSU, Alabama and Arkansas. LSU remains undefeated in their season, including handing Bama their first season loss, while Alabama possibly secured a rematch with the Tigers for the SEC Championship after Oklahoma state went down to Iowa State. IRON BOWL week is finally here as the game of the season between rivals Alabama and Auburn kicks off at 2:30 Saturday. are your game predictions??

SWAC: It was an even better weekend for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs as they punched their ticket to Birmingham to play in the SWAC Championship game after their 17-15 win over Prairie View. The Bulldogs could go up against Grambling or Arkansas-Pine Bluff on December 10! Go Bulldogs!

Local:Sunday marked the 5th year anniversary of the tragic Lee High School Bus Crash that claimed the lives of 4 students and injured over 30 more. Friday the school held a moment of silence in recognition of the anniversary.

WORLD:  There was a recent shooting at the White House. Idaho resident, Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez  is being charged with the attempted assassination of President Barack Obama on November 11. He allegedly fired nine shots at the White house with one bullet hitting the 2nd floor living quarters. The president was not there and no one was hurt. We will continue to follow the progress of this story.

Entertainment: Twitter was blazing last night as we all watched the American Music Awards (AMA) on ABC. Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry all won big including Taylor Swift's win for Artist of the Year over Adele, Lady Gaga, Lil Wayne and Katy Perry. I'm still not sure I buy her 'surprised' faces. The show also brought 17 performances from all the biggest stars Justin Beiber, Jennifer Lopez, The Band Perry and the pants-dropping finale by LMFAO. Nicki Minaj also gave her mother a plug announcing the gospel album momma Minaj is planning to record. Yes, you read that right! A little Communion Sunday to go with Pink Friday.

Katy Perry also made AMA history taking home a Special Achievement Award for being the first female pop artist to have 5 No. 1 Singles off one album. She is in that category with Micheal Jackson from her current album, Teenage Dream.

There's your weekend brief. It's a short week for most of us as the holiday approaches. Work hard and the weekend will be here before you know!

Penn State Child Sex Abuse Scandal

In recent events surrounding the Penn State child sex abuse scandal, a lot of questions still remain unanswered. Longtime coach Joe Paterno and university President Graham Spanier were both fired on Wednesday as the details of the scandal continued to unfold. Paterno had plans to retire at the end of the season. There is only one victim in this case, well several young boys in this case, so why is everyone acting as if Paterno is innocent in this whole matter? Students are rioting in the aftermath of the trustees decision to fire Paterno and that just seems ludicrous. Where are the riots for the young boys that suffered at the malicious hands of Jerry Sandusky and the riots that feel someone should have done more in 2002 when the allegations were brought to Paterno's attention? Not one adult involved felt it was appropriate to contact the police? There seems to be a lot more to consider besides a tarnished legacy.

What are you thoughts? Do you think Paterno should have been able to retire at the end of the season as planned?

Honeymoon is Over

As of today, Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from husband of 72 days Kris Humphries. Not a full month has gone by since Kardashian was all a twitter with excitement over the E! special of their August wedding. "Irreconcilable differences" is the reason listed and online reports say the couple had a prenup and no spousal support will be offered. Considering the couple's entire life is public, be sure the next season of Keeping up with the Kardarshians will reveal all the details. Gotta stay relevant right?
It seems marriages, babies and divorces are a fad in Hollywood. All about the glitz, glamour and millions of dollars in the Kardashian's case. Social media lit fire at the news of the divorce, as if the public opinion matters, but still everyone had something to say including the Twitter trending topic: #thingslongerthanKimswedding. Some called it a good business investment for all involved parties, others were enraged at the disregard for the sanctity of marriage. What are your thoughts? Would you marry someone you've known less than a year? Would you give the marriage time to develop? Tell me what's on your radar. Well wishes to both Kim
and Kris.

Weekend Radar....

Let's see what stories made our Radar over the weekend:

SWAC: The Alabama A&M Bulldogs brought home a win over the Alabama State Hornets at the 70th Annual Magic City Classic in Birmingham, AL 20-19! A&M's, Kaderius Lacey, was named Offensive MVP. Congratulations Bulldogs!

MLB: The St Louis Cardinals win the World Series, beating Texas Rangers 6-2 in Game 7. I don't know who all caught the jaw- dropping end of of Game 6 that ended with David Freese's shirt being ripped off by his teammates after his incredible walk-off home run; but this was a series worth watching. This win gives the Cards their 11th World Series championship. Congratulations!

Politics:Republican presidential candidate, Hermain Cain, stopped in Huntsville as apart of his 2 day campaign trail in Alabama. Cain met with the Alabama Federation of Republican Women and spoke on issues such as his 999 Tax Reform Plan which includes: a 9% Flat Rate Income Tax, a 9% Business Value Added Tax and a 9% National Sales Tax. Cain has gained some ground in the polls being called the 'unconventional candidate', but he has a long way to go as controvery keeps surrounding him. Would you vote for Cain?

Occupy Movement: What started in New York, has moved all across the nation as the Occupy Movement strengthens in numbers. Austin, Boston, Dallas, Nashville and Huntsville are just a few more cities added to the campaign, and the movement has even gone global to Africa. The 99% is not giving up anytime soon. Learn more about the cause and get involved: http://www.occupytogether.org/

So much news and and this was only the weekend. Stay on the radar as we bring your more news from all over.

"Pay As You Earn" Education News

Graduation Day
Considering my loan repayment papers just arrived in the mail with a start day promptly six months after my graduation date, I applaud President Obama for his newest efforts in education.  As a part of his Economic Relief Plan, the president spoke in front of college students in Denver, Colorado on Wednesday to speak on a new program designed to help college graduates reasonably manage student loan dept. Per reports, the average student loan dept for a college graduate is $24,000 as of 2009. I can tell you that number is significantly higher now as the cost of attending college increases every year. One aspect of President Obama’s new plan encourages students to consolidate student loans (given they have 2 or more federal loans) to receive a lower interest rate on repayment.  The interest rate break would be 0.5%.  This new plan would also reduce the repayment from 25 to 20 years with the payment amount being reduced to only 10% of earnings compared to the previous 15%. Another aspect of this new proposed plan is that after 20 years the total dept has not been paid, the debt will be relieved. This is not to say we are allowed to not make payments. This plan is set to take effect in 2014.

With college costs rising every year along with unemployment rates doing the same, it is past time for our government to realize that if a new college graduate has not found a career to support the student loans they have, it is almost impossible for them to repay under the current terms and still support themselves. As a recent college graduate, I want my degree to mean something, and I don’t want it to mean that I am just another statistic of a struggling and diminishing middle class that went to college to make a better life for myself and now can’t because I am literally paying my life away. What are your thoughts on the current economic situation and what President Obama is proposing? Get on the Radar.

David Banner Calls for Support in Black Culture

I don't know how many of you caught BET's 106 and Park on this past Thursday when rapper and producer David Banner dropped by to release his new video for the song "Swag"; but he had a lot to say about the state of the black culture, hip hop music, rappers and current world issues. Check out the interview:

As we watched Banner’s statements, the screen froze, then went black, as if there was an outage at the BET network. When the show resumed, without Banner, there was no mention of the outage (which most major networks would at least briefly mention or apologize). Many viewers took to Twitter and Facebook to vent, and the consensus seems to be that BET intentionally cut Banner's statement. That question still remains unanswered, but what about the statements Banner made; do you agree? Is 'black culture' diminishing because of the the lack of support within our own community? Due to the diminishing middle class (non existent as Banner sees it)  have we lost what and who we are as a black culture? What are your thoughts?

NBA First 2 Weeks CANCELLED

November 1st will not be the start of the 2011 NBA season. Looks like the NBA is following in the footsteps of the NFL as news about the lockout has broken. Reports hit at 10:01ET that NBA Commissioner, David Stern, cancelled the first two weeks of the season after hours of meetings between the owners and players failed to reach a new labor deal for the upcoming season. November 14th is how long this initial cancellation will affect the players, owners, workers and of course the fans. The lockout began July 1 as owners and players failed to reach an agreement before the expiration of the old CBA.

Apple Founder Dead at 56

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, passed today at age 56. Everyone will agree that his innovation of the iPod, iPhone and the iPad has changed the digital era forever. At the young age of 21, Jobs and two other men launched Apple Computer Inc. Jobs recently stepped down as CEO of Apple in August due to his failing health.

Current Apple CEO, Tim Cook, expressed his condolences with employees of Apple in a memo: Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring  mentor. Drastic Changes Coming to Facebook

Zuckerberg demonstrates the new
"Facebook Timeline"
Contrary to the synonymous status updates from all of your friends, Facebook updated their status Sunday: “A rumor on the internet caught our attention. We have no plans to charge for Facebook. It's free and always will be.”I wish my status updates would get 478,094 likes. I ran across an interesting report on CNN about new changes to come for Facebook. If you’re like me, you are oblivious to any changes on Facebook until you log in for the first time in the morning. Zuckerberg and the team are doing things a little different this time around. CNN reports this to be the “website’s biggest web redesign” in Facebook history.  From what I understand; the “mini Facebook” called the Ticker in the top right corner, and the changes to your news feed; are the least of our problems. At the end of the month, the Facebook team is rolling out the “Facebook Timeline”. According to CNN:

Your Facebook profile will go from having one central column to two, with boxes of texts, photos, videos and eve maps of your favorite locations. Rather than just displaying your most recent activities, your profile will become a scrapbook documenting your entire life, all the way back to your birth. Facebook will become a record of your existence: All of your memories, your victories, your defeats, your loves, your losses and everything else in between.(CNN)

Just when I thought I had the Facebook I loved. I followed my inner inquisitive spirit and researched the new template. After downloading the 'developer' and activating the new Facebook Timeline, I immediately logged out and went to bed with a headache. But wait...I revisited  my new and improved page hours later, and I admit I love the update. The Timeline is just that. Think about sitting in 8th grade history and your teacher draws a timeline across the board and marks it with important historical years: 2011---2010---2009 and so on! This new layout simply pinpoints important status updates, wall posts, photographs and comments in reverse chronological order. After playing with my new layout for a while, I felt a more emotional connection to Facebook. That sounds silly and a bit obsessive I know, but where else can you access this much information at one time about your life. So my suggestion, don't wait for the universal roll out and be frustrated like the million other users day of. Everyone should download the Facebook Timeline and start playing with it! I'm sure you could use a few laughs down memory lane. Well done Zuckerberg and team.

The Fight for Troy Davis

Protests on behalf of Davis
Would it be more appropriate for Troy Davis to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole? Petitions, protests and parades are sparking up all over the country for the life of Troy Davis. Is it too late? Davis was convicted of the 1989 killing of Savannah, GA police officer Mark MacPhail. He is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection tonight at 7 p.m. at a state prison in Jackson, Georgia.  The pope, Desmond Tutu and former President Jimmy Carter; and 600,000 people have signed a petition fighting to stop Davis’ execution. Attorneys for Davis were denied clemency on Tuesday for Davis as they presented their case for doubt in physical evidence and witness statements.  Davis has been granted a stay of execution three times prior to this most recent hearing.

In case you have missed this report, here is the breaking story yesterday from CNN:
Davis is set to take a polygraph test this morning; we will continue to follow this case as it develops throughout the day. What's your thoughts about the case? Let's talk about it!

Local Radio Personality Featured in Top Magazine

Rojay Armstead
Contact him: mailto:rojay@supersexysingle.com
The newest issue of Ebony magazine hits stores today! As Mary J. Blige graces the cover, there’s something a little more exciting about this issue. Every year, Ebony has a feature called Sexy Singles, and in this new issue we get the inside scoop on ten men and women who are accomplished, single and…well sexy. This is my favorite issue of Ebony; and this year, I was at Books-A-Million bright and early to get my copy to see Rojay Armstead make his Sexy Single debut.  You hear him clowning with ML6 on Huntsville’s 103.1 WEUP during the day, and he is a part of the team at WAAY 31 TV; well, he can now add Sexy Single to his resume. Rojay is all smiles about being in the magazine. He admits, ‘I never really considered myself as a ‘sexy single’, but I thought it would be something different and out of my comfort zone; so I went for it.” Admitting that he is picky and career focused, a relationship was the last thing on his mind over the past few years; but he recently turned 30 and is open to the possibility. He looks forwards to the doors and business adventures this may open up for him.

Congratulations Rojay, way to put Huntsville on the map for something positive! Go cop your issue of Ebony TODAY to see Rojay and the other sexy singles. Who knows, I might go for it for next year!

Mayweather's KO

Some call it a cheap shot, but I call it a knockout. The fight between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz ended after four rounds on Saturday night with the title going to Mayweather after a gut wrenching left-right combination knockout. Moments before the knockout, Ortiz had Mayweather backed against the ropes and Ortiz landed a head-butt into Mayweather's chin. The true boxer in Mayweather shook it off and finished the fight victorious and a few millions richer.

At the replay, Ortiz appeared to be looking at the referee as Mayweather landed the punch; however I will repeat what everyone already knows: always protect yourself. If he wasn't ready to fight again, he should not have tapped gloves. Maybe Ortiz should have saved the apologizing for after the fight.

Mayweather's record remains at 42-0, but he did say  he would be happy for a rematch with Ortiz if asked. Even if it was only four rounds, it was the fight to see. Congrats Mayweather!

Never Forget...Remembering 9.11

Twin Towers, NY 9-11-01
At fifteen years old , I was not able to fully grasp the significance of the horror the September 11. I remember my teacher walking in from the hall with heavy tears streaming down her face and turning on the television. To what station, it didn't matter, every station was covering the story. Terrorist Attacks. Muslim Extremists.Twin Towers Destroyed. Planes Hijacked. Fatalities Unknown. These headlines resonated our classroom for the rest of the day and for months to come. The new "it" thing amongst my friends and I was wearing red, white and blue everyday. All I knew was everyone around me was hurting, enraged and proud to be an American, so I was fully on board. As the details of 9/11 unfolded, our teachers and parents took the time to help us understand the who, what, when, where and why of the events. I began to better grasp what happened and I cried. Watching footage of the attacks, reading the newspapers and learning the truth behind it was devastating.

Ten years later, it is still heartbreaking to watch and think about the tragedy that was inflicted upon our country. For the innocent lives lost, their families and the service men and women who lost their lives on duty; we should all say a prayer. I find it unfair the racial bias and discrimination inflicted upon any person that resembles the people that committed the crime. I only read about wars in my history books never thinking I would live a war era. Ten years later, I don't have any more answers than what our government has been able to provide; but I offer compassion. Compassion for my fellow American brother or sister, compassion for service men and women who fight everyday to keep me safe, compassion for our leaders who make the decisions that affect my freedom; and even compassion for those who fail to understand what makes us America and Americans as one.

I hope I never have to witness another day like September 11. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's families, service men and women, the United States military and our country's leaders. I know it doesn't get easier, but united we will get through it.

God Bless America,
TerashaNicole

Women In Business

It it possible for us to own our own businesses.Sometimes we are satisfied with what people tell us we are supposed to be satisfied with, and I'm just not going for it  ~Beyonce

Lisa Price, Founder
Carol's Daughter
Today is the day many major corporations are owned and operated by the Rosie the Riveters of the 21st century. Long gone are the days where women are forced to wait for orders or settle for a job. Women are working to their full potential and are doing it better than the men in their careers; and yes, there is a difference between a job and a career. It doesn't come easy. It takes determination, patience, prayer and action! Just ask Lisa Price, founder of Carol's Daughter beauty products. She started in 1990 in her kitchen (yes, the kitchen). After some encouragement from her family and friends, she started Carol's Daughter out of her home in 1993. In 2002, Carol's Daughter grossed more than $2.25 million dollars in sales. I'm sure there were some blood, sweat and tears from 1993 to 2002; but I'm also certain waking up everyday doing something you love and making a swell living from it is more than worth it.

Women in business today are strong in number. It starts with experience, motivation and the basic step by step plan to get started. After you've built that foundation, successful business women know the keys to staying ahead of the game are persistence, the ability to adapt to the ever-changing economy and people. People can be your team; and most importantly, your clients or customers. Successful business women understand that if no one knows about your business, then you will not have one. Hence, the people.

MTV Did it Again:2011 Video Music Awards

DiThe show started off with Mr. Gaga and ended with a skipping, skinny jeans wearing, singing Lil Wayne. I might ruffle some feathers, but I will go on record and say that the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards was one the best award shows all year! We were all looking forward to seeing what Lady Gaga would do to top her egg ensemble; but her alter ego, Mr. Gaga, was very theatrical and was actually a quite refreshing break from the fake blood and meat dress from previous years. We couldn’t breathe for too long as Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry both tried to follow in her footsteps with their outfits- but fail!
Let’s get to some winners and performances
I am happy that such a positive and powerful messaged song won “Video of the Year” with Perry’s Firework, but I could have done without the yellow cube headpiece. Several dancing Britney’s took the stage to honor Britney Spears’ career. Britney did quite well for herself taking home two moonmen from the show including Best Pop Video. She looked very Britney, and I will leave it at that.  I really hope Adele’s album sales soared after she took the stage to croon one of her album’s hits “Someone Like You” This was her debut VMA performance.
MTV never sleeps on the surprises, and what a surprise it was to see Jay Z and Kanye West hit the stage to perform their new single “Otis”. Out of sheer shock I’m sure, one fan had a Lil Mama moment and tried to run on stage, but Jay Z was prepared this time as they were quickly rushed off stage.  If Adele wasn’t enough for you, everyone was all abuzz over the blinged-out cast wearing, comfy chair sitting Jessie J. A talent that surprised us by belting out tunes during intermission from all the stars including the TLC hit “Scrubs”
It was definitely the ladies’ year and the biggest lady (no pun intended) was Beyonce. You didn’t think I would skip that did you? She runs the world. She was practically a human disco ball from the sequined jacket to the way she glowed over the announcement of her pregnancy. She didn’t dance like Queen B usually does, with good reason, as she unbuttoned her jacket and rubbed her growing belly at the end of her performance. Jay Z could not control his excitement. That is probably the most excitement I’ve ever seen him show over their relationship. Congratulations to Beyonce and Jay Z! That will be one talented child!
MTV also honored the late Amy Whinehouse with an appearance from Russell Brand, Tony Bennett and Bruno Mars. It was very nice to see Whinehouse remembered for her remarkable talent.
MTV definitely didn’t disappoint this year and all the right stars were honored and showcased for their talent. Well, except for that Tyler the Creator guy, but that’s a different blog. I will now blast Adele and Jessie J until the world ends and wait for the first pics of Beyonce’s unborn star!
Well done MTV,

Remembering Aaliyah

Today marks 10 years since she left this earth, but I still find myself playing her music as if it was released two months ago. The only way to describe Aaliyah's music is true. True rhythm and blues at its finest. There are many great artists today, but no one comes close to the sound and feeling that Aaliyah left in her music. Whether it was Age Aint Nothing but a Number(1994) or One in a Million(1996), both albums were great. If she were alive today, there is no doubt that she would be one of the greatest artists ranking over many leading female artists today. We pray for her family today and remember her for what she was: beautiful, talented and timeless.

She was that Somebody,

The Verdict: Is it a Race Matter?

After hearing the verdict in the Casey Anthony case, most people took to Facebook and Twitter to express their frustration over the outcome. From numerous posts and updates, people all across the country were outraged by the verdict. Evidence, fairness, justice system, jurors, race-yes; even race- were reasons behind the frustration of Anthony being acquitted of all but four misdemeanor charges. Every reason except the latter seems to be appropriate concerns to the outcome. Race a ludicrous claim. Simply put, people were saying Casey Anthony got off because she was white. There seems to be a lack of significance to this claim especially since people were juxtaposing her crime to the 2007 Michael Vick dog fighting case. It is one thing to say that Casey Anthony is the modern day OJ Simpson case, but we are not going to touch that. If one is set in comparing this to the Michael Vick case, may I suggest you remember he plead guilty and accepted a plea. If anything, the fact that the jury consisted of seven women and five men from different backgrounds and family makeup was the significant factor to the verdict. If that fails to make sense, neither does saying it is because she was white.

It is easy to sit around and recall every case where African American or Caucasian men or women were found guilty or innocent in similar or even less heinous crimes such as: Estelle Walker (African American) who was sentenced in 2010 to admittingly starving her four children in 2006 (the children survived);Nicole Redhead (Caucasian) sentenced 12 years for suffocating her 2-year old daughter or the infamous Huntsville, AL murder trial of Heather McGill who was acquitted of killing her three children in 1998. In these cases, is it sincerely plausible to think a jury deliberates based on skin color? The fact that race is ever present in our society holds true because there are times when race is motive i.e. hate crimes. What needs to be dismissed, however, is African Americans finding it necessary to drudge up any reason to pull the race card. There are a lot of black and white issues in our society, but the Casey Anthony case is not one of those-guilty or innocent. The acquittal did not come because she is white, the defense simply played the game the way it is supposed to be played and that was in Casey Anthony's favor.

Casey Anthony is NOT a Killer...

Casey Anthony was acquitted of first degree murder and other serious charges against her on July 5, 2011; but she will be sentenced on four misdemeanor counts (up to a year jail time per count) for providing false information to law enforcement during the investigation. While everyone has their opinion about the case, can these opinions present evidence needed to convict? It was the prosecution's obligation to prove Anthony guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Everyone points to the jurors, but why? To seek the death penalty, the prosecution needed to provide concrete and unquestionable evidence in their case against Anthony, and left to the jurors- the evidence was not there.

In closing arguments, the prosecution presented a strong and feasible scenario as to how and why Casey Anthony is the guilty, but I can tell you about the fountain of youth all day if I can’t take you there- would you believe me?

So what happens now? Is the case open? Do they attempt to arrest someone else? Will the evidence be sealed off in a room with Jon Benet Ramsay, Nicole Simpson and Natalie Holloway? In any case, if Casey Anthony truly is innocent or guilty, she at least owes it to her daughter to confess who the killer is and the true crime that was committed against 2-year old Caylee in 2008. Another "If I Did It" perhaps? It is easy to fault the jury for the verdict rendered, but ask yourself did Casey Anthony really win?

What started back in 2001 to celebrate African Americans in the entertainment industry, has seemed to turn into a showcase for hip hop music and all that has gone wrong with music as we know it. The 2011 BET Awards aired June 26, 2011; and while one can yield to say it was all bad, you cannot bring yourself to say it was all good either. Some of the highlights of the show included: the host, Kevin Hart, and all of his funny anecdotes; the Walter Hawkins Tribute praise break; Patti Labelle’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the BET Music Matters snippets where they showcased up and coming artists such as Mali Music and KimberlyNichole; and Marsha Ambrosious. Clearly, the evening was not entirely wasted.

However, when will BET ask these artists to keep their clothes on, play more of the music that we have never heard that were in some of the categories (i.e. .Best Female Rap- besides Nicki, who were they?) or get a new audio tech (because clearly after 10 years that same person has failed to get it right). These may seem minute, but they made a big difference in the quality of the show. We get it BET. Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and DJ Khaled had a plethora of collaborations this year. Where were other artists that were actually nominated such as: Miguel (stuck on the pre-show), Keri Hilson (presenting), and J. Cole (who has had a silent but powerful come up)? Most importantly, where were the awards? It seemed to be mostly about the music, but there were other categories that we have been able to see presented over the past few years that were not mentioned this year. Best Actor and Actress went to Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, Best Movie went to For Colored Girls Only and the Centric Award went to Marsha Ambrosious. Maybe we missed these mentions in the time they were showing commercials for the new sitcom or in anticipation of Beyonce’s “live” telecast from Greenland. Oh, and congratulation to Tiffany Green for becoming the new Antoine Dodson-enjoy your fifteen minutes and a trending topic.

Perhaps some people just care too much about the other aspects of black entertainment other than music or that BET has had ten years to make sure this show runs a lot smoother that it did. Be that as it may, with good intentions, it is another year under the belt for the BET Awards; and we anticipate what is to come in the next year of black entertainment. Ready for some new faces with fresh and real talent!

“Turn off the TV”

Perhaps part of the problem with child obesity is parents placing the responsibility of entertaining their children on Justin Beiber, Nintendo DS, cell phones, iCArly and any other less than physical activity to keep their child entertained. Everyone is quick to place the blame on fast-food restaurants, but eleven year old Brittany at 130lbs did not drive herself through the drive through.

The best advice I’ve heard someone give on child obesity is comedian Mo’Nique to a mother struggling with an overweight 13 year old daughter. She told the mother, you have to take the first step. Watch what YOU eat and exercise with your daughter. Get up thirty minutes earlier to take a walk and to fix a healthy breakfast. Don’t let her have what she wants to eat only give her what she needs. She only eats that way and doesn’t make healthier choices because you don’t make her. That is advice we can all learn from. Regardless of your feelings towards Mo’Nique and her outlook on weight she makes a valid point and her own weight chronicles this advice.

There are many causes of child obesity ranging from over-eating, genetics, emotional stress, abuse, health problems and so on. Whatever the case may be, parents have to take the first step in making sure their family is healthy and lose the ‘do as I say not as I do’ mentality and lead by example. It is not about being super skinny, but it is about raising a generation of healthier of kids and this starts at your own dinner table.

A great way to start is to come out for Radar Magazine’s Official North Alabama “Let’s Move” Campaign on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Alabama A & M University. Details on Facebook!
